Rob Stead

Well Grubbed Old Mole

After a 25 year career in IT, writing software and supporting London based charities, I turned my hand to house renovation before starting a long held dream to study photography at Ulster University (2019-2021). Well Grubbed Old Mole was my Master's project.

Summary

Rob Stead's photographic project, Well Grubbed Old Mole, documents his personal journey and evolving identity in response to Brexit. The project, presented as a tabloid newspaper and online, combines assisted portraiture exploring people's hopes and fears with a personal photo diary. Stead's accompanying dissertation, "All Fur Coat and No Knickers," examines the theoretical underpinnings of his work, exploring post-Marxist theories and their application to photography, particularly the concept of populism and its metaphorical construction. The newspaper features interviews and images from England and Ireland, showcasing a range of perspectives on the impact of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, the project aims to capture the nuances of identity change and social response to major historical events through a multi-faceted approach.
